you might have heard this, but if not, check out mali music (self-titled). damon albarn went to mali with a melodica and met all these musicians and wrote and recorded sessions of material, then went back to his london studio and added different parts, sent tapes back and forth to mali and this is what came out of it. it was done before both gorillaz LPs and sounds nothing like it or his work with blur but an amazing record to say the least. damon's label, honest jon's, also has some really good re-issues of african music.

I always thought melodicas were funny. And to that effect, I always thought they were cool if used trying to be funny or ridiculous or something. I'm not so sure about using them to be... well to be any kind of serious really.
I used to like it back when I listened to Ben Folds. The dude's a killer player, no doubt, but I've long since outgrown his music. It's corny. So is the melodica.
I don't really listen to enough music like this, save what Ed spins when we're sitting around, so my opinions aren't really all that valid on African music. But seems to me that the general feeling is that anyone who goes to Africa and makes a record with unknown or relatively unknown musicians instantly has created something increadibly amazing and pure and meaningful...
I guess so... *shrug*

i'm gonna have to agree with Fluck, concerning the melodica issues. Albarn used them to great effect on the first Gorillaz album, and a lot of really dope reggae artists like Agustus Pablo use melodia too. I can't really think of anyone else at the moment, but nobody sleep on the melodica.
